said that. It is a place of mythological importance, and dedicated to Hindu God, Lord Shiva.
This place has a historic importance as well. There is remains of the fort of
Banasur (Vanasur-Ka-Kila), nearby, who was killed by Lord Krishna. Apart from
being a favourite destination for tourists, this place is famous for its
celebration of Holi and Janamashtmi. The Khadi bazaar of the town is an added
attraction, and the scenic Galchaura.

Lohaghat on the banks of Lohawati River in Champawat district is one of the
important places for its beautiful temples. Located at an altitude of 1706 mts,
Lohaghat is a few kilometers from Pithoragarh. This ancient town of Lohaghat
has immense historical and mythological importance which attracts a number of
tourists. Mostly devotees and pilgrims from all over drop into Lohaghat before
visiting Advaita Ashram which is also called the Mayawati Ashram. A sleepy
little town of Uttarakhand it shot to fame because of the beautiful temples and
fascinating locales nearby.

It is famous for Bagwal fight carnival which takes place at Devidhura (In
Maa Baarahi temple) on auspicious day of Raksha bandhan day.Devidhura is
45 km.away from Lohaghat. Nearby Ritha-sahib is a famous Sikh gurudwara
and sweet Rithas that are unique in the world and Pancheshwar is famous for
river-rafting and adventurous sports

Mayawati Ashram :- Located at a distance of 9 km from Lohaghat
this is famous for the Advaita Ashram which attracts pilgrims and tourists from
all over the world.
Advaita Ashrama at Mayavati is not only a
tourist place but it also a Holy place for Bengalies in summer season. Most
Bengalies came here to know abaout the mission of Swami Abhedananda,a disciple
of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, and a favourite brother-disciple of Swami
Vivekananda.It was Swami Abhedananda who founded the Mayawati Ashram and lived
there for many years. There is a huge library with literature available about
Swamis Abhedananda and Vivekananda, and a mission hospital.

Abbot Mount :- Situated at a distance of 7 km from Lohaghat this
is one of the most serene locales near Lohaghat. Spend a few moments amidst
serenity in Abbot Mount.

Lohaghat had a population of 5828. Males constitute 56% of the population and
females 44%. Lohaghat has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the
national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 75%. In
Lohaghat, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
